Job Description

System Engineer – IT Infrastructure - VML0042

Purpose:

  • The system engineer is responsible for delivering, maintaining and optimizing infrastructure systems to support various business requirements.
  • This role is responsible for reviewing solution design, understanding their impact on infrastructure and ensuring the availability of supporting and enabling infrastructure from internal and external service providers
  • This role is responsible for monitoring, maintaining and supporting the operational capacity, availability and performance of the solution against predefined SLAs
  • This role is responsible for providing infrastructure-related level two and level three incident and problem management

Key Accountabilities / Key Activities:

  • Work with service providers to forecast and right-size long term capacity and performance requirements iterating regularly
  • Design and implement supporting infrastructure and tooling for operational and business projects
  • Monitor and maintain infrastructure performance capacity and availability providing a second and third level support for the resolution of infrastructure related incidents and problems
  • Monitor and review infrastructure related incidents and problems to identify improvements

Functional & Technical Skills

  • System analysis and infrastructure design in a mission critical environment
  • Planning and implementing all the necessary maintenance and enhancements to systems, such as security hardening, operating system patches, hardware firmware updates and other improvements as deemed necessary
  • Troubleshoot, remediate and perform post-mortem analysis on issues or faults for root cause identification and correction
  • Commissioning, maintaining and troubleshooting IT infrastructure systems throughout its lifecycle and planning upgrades or replacements before reaching end-of-life
  • Infrastructure automation and configuration management tools such as Puppet or Ansible
  • Physical and Virtual infrastructure platforms which include virtual environments, various server and storage area network technologies and backup solutions
  • Application layer load balancing technologies such as F5 and nginx
  • Programming and scripting language experience such as Bash, Power shell, Python etc.
  • Infrastructure and IT management frameworks such as ITIL and COBIT

  • Strong time management skills and comfortable working under pressure
  • Willingness to track, assess and incorporate practice and technology developments and innovation into day-to-day working
  • Good understanding of the business capability/user journey, wider organisation goals and desired product business outcome

Credentials & Experience:

  • Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or other related field
  • Two or more years’ experience in deploying and/or administering infrastructure solutions
  • Experience of current and emerging technologies including virtualisation, containerisation and automation
  • Experience with programming and scripting languages such as Bash, Power Shell and Python
  • Experience of configuration management tools such as Ansible or Puppet
  • Experience with managing and administering physical systems in line with pre-defined SLAs which include but not limited to servers, SAN and backup solutions
  • Experience with application layer load balancing technologies such as F5 or nginx
  • Good knowledge of TCP/IP network protocol
  • Strong understanding of IT Management frameworks such as ITIL and COBIT
